In Sudan and Nigeria, death rates from cholera outbreaks reached as high as three times the global average this October 2024. These increased deaths were a result of a combination of flooding, combined with ongoing conflict that seriously hampered access to lifesaving treatment. The cholera crisis poses an especially dangerous threat for children, whose lives are at risk when health systems collapse amidst disasters and wars. For Sudan, the Case Fatality Rate increased to 3.1%, while for Nigeria, it reached 2.9%, against the global standard of 1%, states Save the Children.
The victims of such outbreaks are mainly the most vulnerable people in conflict zones and areas suffering from serious flooding. Fighting in Sudan that started in April 2023 has destroyed health facilities, while continuous rains have heightened sewage problems, contaminated drinking water, and displaced thousands. Children in Sudan account for 15% of the cholera cases. In Nigeria, similarly, floods had raised the level of challenges by displacing millions of them, cutting off communities from clean water and health care services. Both countries are staring at severe health issues amid deteriorating conditions caused by war and natural disasters.
The international community and local authorities scramble to respond. In Sudan, for example, such organizations as Save the Children have improved water sanitation, chlorinated water sources, and treated cholera-affected areas. Efforts in Nigeria are geared toward ensuring people have access to clean water and rebuilding broken health facilities. However, the access routes are often blocked, infrastructure damaged, and funding too short for the humanitarian efforts to take off in good time. Save the Children is urgently calling for international support to help in rebuilding much-needed infrastructure and supply medication to these areas.
