UN condemns attack killing 12 civilians, calls for restraint and immediate de-escalation to protect lives and prevent wider conflict.

Twelve residents, including children and teenagers, were tragically killed on July 28, 2024, in Majdal Shams, a Druze village in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, as a consequence of a rocket attack. Secretary-General António Guterres and other UN representatives have strongly condemned this event, urging caution and emphasizing the need to protect civilians, particularly children.

The militant group Hezbollah, which is supported by Iran, has increased its attacks of which this one is a mere part. An Israeli couple was slain by one of its rocket barrages in July alone. Israel retaliated by attacking a portion of Hezbollah's infrastructure located in Lebanon. This recurring conflict underlines how fragile peace and security in the region really are—between which a larger-scale conflict can burst out with catastrophic consequences.

Moreover, UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert and UNIFIL Force Commander Lt. Gen. Aroldo Lázaro have joined the calls for restraint, warning of a possible wider conflagration. The top UN Middle East envoy, Tor Wennesland, added that the status quo is unsustainable.

The standpoint of the UN is based on international law and the implementation of UN Security Council resolution 1701, which seeks to stop the fighting and prevent an escalation of the conflict. Resolution 1701, which was ratified in August 2006, established a demilitarized zone and called for the evacuation of Israeli forces from Lebanese land in an effort to end the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.

Therefore, as the crisis develops under intense international scrutiny, the need for diplomatic solutions and de-escalation measures becomes even more critical. Lacking timely de-escalation steps and proper civilian protection, the entire region risks slipping into a wider and more destructive conflict. That at the Golan Heights shows the price in human lives of protracted violence and the need for more peace efforts.
