In the past month, approximately 1,200 refugees have died from starvation in a Bama, Nigeria camp. The makeshift camp is located on the grounds of a hospital compound and houses 24,000 people. One in five of the 15,000 children is suffering from acute malnutrition. Doctors without Borders have counted 1,233 graves, with 480 of the graves belonging to children.

Doctors without Borders is calling this a “drastic humanitarian catastrophe.” Some children have been referred to a special feeding facility in Maiduguri. This was the first trip to Bama by Doctors without Borders since the city was taken back from Boko Haram in March 2015. They had held the city since September 2014.

Boko Haram has been known to burn down homes and destroy wells, limiting the resources available to civilians. More than 15,000 have been killed and 2 million displaced by Boko Haram in the last seven years. Most territory has been recaptured by the Nigerian army, but the group still conducts some suicide bombings.
