A suicide bombing on Tuesday morning in central Baghdad killed seven people and wounded 27 others. The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for this attack, as well as Friday’s attack at an amateur soccer game in the south of Baghdad killing 26 people.
The bomb was detonated near a gathering of workers in Tayaran Square, within a kilometer of a sit-in by supporters of Shi’ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr to demand political reform. The Islamic State claimed the attack in an online statement, declaring that they targeted Shi’ite militiamen. A medical official has confirmed the death toll at seven.
The Islamic State has recently increased the number of bombings outside of Baghdad and their primary control centres in recent months. Earlier this month, at least 60 people were killed in Hilla, and the recent bombings in Brussels and Paris have been interpreted by European analysts as a sign of the Islamic State expanding its field of action in response to the setbacks in Iraq and Syria. Analysts in Baghdad see recent attacks as a continuation of indiscriminate suicide bombings.
