As reported by Relifweb, in the early hours of the morning, around 2 a.m. on 12 January 2024, parts of northern Yemen were the target of air strikes.
The military actions were conducted by a coalition led by the US and the UK.
According to various sources, the air operations specifically targeted military garrisons located in the cities of Sana'a, Hudaydah, Saada and Taiz.
The Reuters news agency reported that so far, the 73 attacks have killed five people and wounded other six people. (Reuters:2024).This figure was confirmed by other media outlets such as the BBC (BBC:2024).
Relifweb expresses serious concern about a further risk of civilian casualties and humanitarian crises worldwide, especially considering the dramatic situation in Gaza because of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The people of Yemen are extremely vulnerable and would be severely affected in the event of further forced internal displacement and a reduction in their livelihoods.
As reported by Al-Jazeera on Monday 15, Houthi rebels in Yemen hit a US-owned and operated container ship with an anti-ship ballistic missile off the coast of Yemen, the US Central Command said. The US military said that no significant injuries or damage were reported and that the ship is continuing its voyage after the incident in the Gulf of Aden.
According to Al-Jazeera, the Yemeni rebel group claimed responsibility for the attack. "All American and British ships and warships involved in the aggression against our country are considered hostile targets," said military spokesman Yahya Saree.
The concern among various humanitarian organisations now is that what began as an offensive mainly involving military groups could turn into an internal conflict with inevitable and devastating consequences for the civilian population.
